サッカー日本代表は日本時間6月7日午前、アメリカ・タンパでザンビアと親善試合を行い、4−3で勝利した。これで親善試合の日程はすべて終え、15日のワールドカップ初戦、コートジボワール戦を迎えることになる。
前半、日本は球際に強いザンビアの守備に苦しみ、2点を失うが、前半終了間際、相手のハンドを得てペナルティキックで本田圭佑が1点を返す。
後半、大久保嘉人が入ると攻撃が活性化。香川真司が大久保に狙って入れたクロス性のボールがそのままゴールインし、2−2の同点に。日本がボールを回す良い流れになると、森重真人の折り返しから本田が再び決めて3−2で逆転する。このまま勝利と思われた後半終了間際、相手のミドルシュートが味方の足に当ってゴールイン、同点に追いつかれる。
後半追加タイムに、入ったばかりの青山敏弘が前線に走りこんだ大久保にピッタリ合い、ボレーシュートを叩き込んで、4−3と勝利した。
セットプレーや一対一の守備などで課題は残すが、大黒柱の本田の復調の兆しが見られるなど、収穫もあった。
日本代表は8日にブラジルに移動。15日の本番に備える。
