イギリス中部ウエストヨークシャー州バーストールで6月16日午後1時(日本時間同日午後9時)ごろ、労働党所属の女性下院議員、ジョー・コックス氏(41)が男に銃で撃たれたあと刃物のようなもので刺された。コックス議員は病院で手当てを受けていたが死亡した。BBCなどが伝えた。

ハフポストUK版によると、警察は事件後に現場近くで52歳の男を逮捕した。現場では77歳の男性もけがをしたという。

国論を二分しているEU離脱を問う国民投票を23日に控えた中で、今回の事件はイギリスに衝撃を与えた。殺害されたコックス議員は、イギリスのEU残留を呼びかけていた。

事件を受けてイギリスのキャメロン首相は、Twitter上でコックス議員への哀悼の意と、彼女の家族を気遣うコメントを発表した。

ジョー・コックスの死は悲劇です。 彼女は献身的で思いやりのある下院議員でした。 私は彼女の夫ブレンダンと彼女の2人の子供のことが気がかりです。

また、コックス議員が所属した労働党のコービン党首もコメントを発表した。

すべての労働党支持者、そしてもちろんイギリス全体が、ジョー・コックスが殺害されたことに衝撃と悲しみを受けています

コックス議員の夫、ブレンダン氏は以下のような声明を発表した

「今日から、痛みと困難さが増し、喜びと最高の愛が欠けた新たな生活が始まる。ジョーはより良い世界を信じ、熱意を傾けて毎日闘った。憎しみには信念も人種も宗教もなく、あるのは毒だけだ。ジョーは人生に後悔していないと思う。彼女は人生を精一杯生き抜いた」

事件を受けて、国民投票でEU残留を支持する団体は、16日に実施する予定だった全ての運動を取りやめると発表した。また、EU離脱を支持する団体も、この日の運動を取りやめるとロイター通信が伝えた。
