イギリス労働党下院のジョー・コックス議員が6月16日午後、イングランド北部リーズ近郊の街バーストールで銃撃を受け殺害されたことを受け、夫のブレンダンさんがコメントを発表し、妻をたたえた。

今日、私たちの人生は新しい章が始まります。以前より困難で、つらく、喜びや愛にあふれる日々は少なくなります。私やジョーの友人、家族は、子供たちを愛するため、養うため、そしてジョーを死に追いやった憎悪と闘うために、どんな時も働きます。

ジョーはより良い世界を信じ、そのために毎日精力的に闘い、強い熱意を持って人々を疲弊させる生活を改善するために闘っていました。

妻は、今起きていることに対して特に2つのことを望んでいるでしょう。1つ目は、私たちの大切な子供たちがあふれる愛に包まれていること、そして2つ目は、妻を殺した憎悪に対して私たち全員が団結して闘うことです。憎悪には信念、人種や信仰心はなく、毒があるのみです。

17日早朝、ブレンダンさんは妻の写真をTwitterに投稿した。

コックス氏は首都ロンドンに住んでいた時、家族とテムズ川のハウスボート(船上、水上の建物)で生活していた。また16日の残留派が小型船で演説した時には、家族そろって参加していた。

今日はもう #Floatila(小型船)はないとわかって、子供たちは本当にがっかりしている。

ジョー・コックス議員は16日午後1時ごろ、男に大型の刃物で刺され、銃で複数回撃たれた。コックス議員はリーズ市内の病院に搬送されたが、その後死亡した。一部メディアによると、銃撃したのはトミー・メイアー容疑者(52)で、男は国粋主義的な発言をしたという。また、現場近くにいた77歳の男性もケガをした。コックス議員は当日、現場近くの図書館で住民と定例会をする予定だった。

コックス議員はウエストヨークシャー州出身の41歳。2015年の総選挙で、野党労働党から下院に出馬し、初当選した。23日に行われるEUからの離脱を問う国民投票(ブレグジット)ではEU残留派として活動し、「EUからの離脱はイギリス経済や雇用、地方ビジネスや地域社会に不安定をもたらす」と主張し、EU残留を強く訴えていた
