米ＦＯＸスポーツ（電子版）などによると、同日午前３時ごろに地元警察に通報があり、当局が転覆して岩に衝突した船とフェルナンデス投手を含む３人が死亡しているのを発見した。
キューバ出身のフェルナンデス投手は２００８年に米国へ亡命し、１１年にマーリンズに入団。デビューした１３年に１２勝を挙げてナ・リーグ新人王に輝き、その後右肘の手術を経て復帰。大リーグを代表する投手となり、今季は２４日までに２９試合に登板して１６勝８敗、防御率２．８６の好成績だった。

マーリンズはイチロー外野手が所属している。球団は同25日、本拠地で予定されていたブレーブス戦を中止にすると発表した。試合前にはイチローのメジャー通算3000安打の記念式典が行われることになっていたが、祝賀ムードは一転、球場は大きな悲しみに包まれた。
フェルナンデスは、同僚のイチローを「彼は神だ」と尊敬し、再三の好守備にはマウンドから体全体で喜びを表し、感謝していた。25日に本拠地マーリンズパークで記者会見に臨んだ球団幹部の背後には、ユニホーム姿の選手全員が立ち、哀悼の意を示した。イチローも沈痛な表情だったという。
また先週、自身のInstagramで、恋人が妊娠していることを公表したばかりだった。浜辺で大きなおなかをさする女性の写真を掲載し、「あなたたちに出会えて本当によかった。これからどんな旅になろうとも僕たちは一緒だよ」との言葉を添えていた。
