ロシアのカザニで行われている水泳の世界選手権第15日の8月7日、女子200メートル平泳ぎで渡部香生子が2分21秒15で金メダルを獲得し、2016年のリオデジャネイロオリンピックの日本代表に内定した。
スポニチによると、18歳での世界選手権金メダルは日本人最年少となる。2013年大会の男子400メートル個人メドレーを制した瀬戸大也の19歳を抜いた。
プールサイドに上がると両目に涙を浮かべ「ゴールの瞬間？緊張感とかプレッシャーとかが一気に全部なくなった感じが本当に最高で、これまでにないぐらいスッキリした感じ」と振り返った。
