世界ランキング１１位の錦織圭（２４＝日清食品）が、全豪覇者で同４位のスタニスラス・ワウリンカ（スイス）に競り勝ち、１９１８年熊谷一弥以来日本男子大会９６年ぶりの４強入りを果たした。

第10シードの錦織圭は、第3シードのスタニラス・ワウランカを、3-6、7-5、7-6、6-7、6-4の激戦を制した。
錦織は、大会前に右足親指にできた嚢胞（のうほう）の摘出出術を行い、直前まで出場が危ぶまれていた。試合形式の練習は、大会の2、3日前に始めていたという。
トレーニングはしていたけど、（試合形式の）ポイント練習は大会の２、３日前に始めた。こんな大きな結果は予想していなかった。次の試合が楽しみ。
