アジアカップで2連覇を狙うサッカー日本代表は1月20日、1次リーグD組のヨルダン戦で2-0と快勝し、3連勝で決勝トーナメント進出を決めた。チームを勢いづかせる先制ゴールを奪ったのは、3試合連続得点のFW本田圭佑（ACミラン）だった。
過去２試合のゴールはＰＫだった。流れの中では、好機にもシュートをゴールポストに当てるなど外していた。それでも焦りはなかったという。「パスを出しておけばよかったと思わせる飛び出しに徹するだけ。その回数と質を上げていきたい」。決定力不足の解決は好機を増やすことだと、自らに言い聞かせて集中力を高めた。
ヨルダン戦の前半２４分がまさにそうだ。左寄りでボールが展開する間に、するするとゴール右へ。岡崎のシュートをＧＫがはじいたところに走り込み、やすやすとゴールへ蹴り込んだ。

攻撃の柱としてチームを引っ張った本田は試合後、「まだチャンスを無駄にしているところがある。精度を高めていけたら」と決勝トーナメントに向けて、気を引き締めていた。
本田は数日前、全豪オープンで初戦突破したテニスの錦織圭と初対面した。これまで交流はなかったが知人を通じてホテルで面会し、互いにユニホームを交換して健闘を誓い合ったという。
日本は1月23日の準々決勝で、C組2位のアラブ首長国連邦（UAE）と対戦する。
