アメリカ大リーグのレッドソックスは8月10日、抑えの上原浩治投手（40）が右手首の骨折と診断され、今季絶望の見通しになったと発表した。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。
上原は７日のタイガース戦で登板した際に右手首付近に打球を受けた。試合直後の検査では骨に異常はないと診断されたが、痛みが引かず、遠征中のチームを離れボストンに戻っていた。
昨年１０月に２０１６年までの２年契約を結んだ上原は、今季は４３試合に登板して２勝４敗２５セーブ、防御率２．２３。チームがア・リーグ東地区最下位と低迷する中、抑えとして安定した投球を続けていた。

上原は10日、自身のTwitterで次のように報告した。
上原はまた、右手首付近に打球を受けたことについて、自身のブログで「逃げてヒットにされるのは悔しい。あの時だって、もしあれがヒットになってたら、逆転されてる可能性があったわけだし、後悔はない」と記した。
