韓国南西部で沈没した大型旅客船「セウォル号」の事故で、軍や海洋警察、民間の漁船や潜水夫による行方不明者救出作業は4月18日で3日目を迎えた。
18日午後8時現在、確認された死者は28人、行方不明者は268人。
【韓国旅客船沈没事故】
海洋警察はこの日の記者会見で、潜水士約20人が午後6時すぎからセウォル号3階の客室に入ることに成功し、船内の捜索を始めたことを明らかにした。
聯合ニュースによると、午後3時すぎから潜水士がセウォル号2階の貨物室から船内に入ったが、積み荷などが散乱していて障害物が多く、行方不明者がいるとみられる3階の食堂や客室には入れなかったという。
軍の救助支援本部は、水面下に完全に沈んだセウォル号の浮力を維持するために空気袋を設置した。
現場にはクレーン船4隻も到着しており、韓国政府はクレーンでの船体引き揚げも検討しているが、引き揚げで船体が大きく揺れて、空気がたまっているエアポケットの部分に海水が入り、生存者がいた場合に生命の危険を伴う可能性もあることから、家族の同意なしでは引き揚げ作業に入らないことを決めた。
現場周辺の海域には、セウォル号から流出したとみられる油膜も広がっている。
■船長ら船員3人の逮捕状を請求
沈没事故を捜査している警察と検察の合同捜査本部は18日、60代の男性船長と、事故当時に船を操舵していた20代の女性3等航海士ら船員3人に対し、船員法違反容疑で逮捕状を請求した。乗客を安全に避難させる任務を怠り、乗客を死傷させた疑いが持たれている。
沈没事故では、船員が乗客に「船に残れ」と船内放送で繰り返し呼びかけた一方、船長が乗客を残して船を脱出していた疑いが指摘され、捜査本部の取り調べを受けていた。
■修学旅行、引率していた教頭が自殺か
修学旅行の高校生を率いて沈没した旅客船に乗り、救助されたタンウォン高校の教頭が18日午後4時ごろ、行方不明者の家族が待機している体育館近くの山林で、首をつった状態で見つかった。
聯合ニュースによると、教頭は50代。タンウォン高校の修学旅行を引率団長として率い、沈没した旅客船に乗船していた。16日の事故後、自身は救助ヘリで脱出したが、17日夜から姿が見えなくなっていた。
警察によると教頭は「自分だけ助かった」と悩んでいたといい、自殺とみて調べている。
タンウォン高校の修学旅行は生徒・教師325人が乗っていたが、生存が確認できたのは78人にとどまる。行方不明者の家族が集まっている珍島の体育館では17日、校長が教師十数人とともに壇上で土下座したが、激高した行方不明者の父母からペットボトルの水を投げかけられていた。教頭も一緒に謝罪しようとしたが、できなかったという。
