韓国南西部・珍島沖で起きた旅客船沈没事故で、事故発生から5日目の4月20日、海洋警察は船内の客室部分にダイバーを入れ、取り残されている人たちの遺体の収容を開始した。生存者は見つかっていない。NHKニュースが報じた。
韓国海洋警察は１９日夜遅くになって、ダイバーが船の窓を割って船内の客室部分に入ることができるようになり、中に取り残された人たちの遺体の収容を始めました。

海洋警察は、船体への進入口を５つ設けたことから、複数のダイバーを同時に投入することができるようになったとしており、気象条件が比較的よいと予想される２０日に捜索活動を加速させることにしています。
一方、救助活動の拠点となっているチンドの体育館には、安否が分からない高校生をはじめとする乗客の家族が待機していますが、事故から５日目となり、疲れといらだちを強めています。

聯合ニュースによると、20日午後6時現在、確認された死者は58人、行方不明者は244人となった。
また、捜索現場で作業中にけがをした20代の海軍兵士が19日、搬送先の病院で死亡した。亡くなった兵士は、旅客船が沈没した16日に捜索のため現場に投入された海軍艦艇で作業中に頭にけがをし意識不明となっていた。捜索隊側で死者が出たのは初めてだという。
今回の事故で約300人の死者、行方不明者が出ている一方で、船長、航海士、機関士といった、いわゆる「船舶職」の乗組員15人は全員救助されていたのだという。
結局、船長、航海士、機関士らいわゆる「船舶職」の乗務員１５人は全員救助された。「客室で待機せよ」という放送のため、乗客らが右往左往している間に、乗組員らは慣れた船内の通路を利用し、先に脱出したのだ。特に船長は乗客が全員脱出するまで救助措置を取らなければならない基本的な義務を果たさなかった。
