欧州連合（EU）残留か離脱かを問うイギリスの国民投票での離脱派の勝利を受け、残留派のロンドン市民らが「ロンドンは独立し、EU加盟を目指そう」と呼び掛けたchange.orgでのネット署名に人々が殺到している。開票結果の最終発表からわずか1日後の6月25日午後5時半時点で、署名の数は11万人以上に達している。
テレグラフによると、国民投票の結果、ロンドン市内では59.9%対40.1%で残留派が多数を占めていた。ロンドン市長のサディク・カーン市長は5月に就任したばかり。自身もパキスタン移民２世で初のイスラム教徒の市長でもある。
change.orgの呼びかけ文には、「ロンドンは国際都市で、ヨーロッパの中心であり続けることを我々は望んでいる。ただ、他の地方の人々はそれを望んでいないことがわかった。それならば分離し、大陸の友人たちと一緒になろうではないか」と記載されている。カーン市長にロンドン独立を促すことを求めている。
