女性が教育を受ける権利などを訴え、ノーベル平和賞を受賞したマララ・ユスフザイさんが7月12日、レバノン東部のシリア国境に近いベカー平原を訪れ、シリア難民キャンプに女学校を開校した。女子教育を支援するNGO「マララ基金」が資金を提供した。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。

キャンプに身を寄せる14~18歳の少女200人以上を対象に、教育や技能訓練の機会を提供する。

この日、18歳となったマララさんは、声明を出し「勇気ある少女たちと誕生日を迎えたことを誇りに思う」と表明した。一方で「シリアと周辺国と世界の指導者に言いたい。シリア人、とりわけシリアの子供たちをあなた方は見捨てている。過去数十年で最悪の難民問題であり、胸が張り裂けそうな悲劇だ」と訴えた。

ロイター通信によると、生徒側は歌やバースデーケーキを用意してマララさんを歓迎した。マララさんは感極まった様子で「教育がとても大事だと分かっている彼女たちにアドバイスはいらない」と語った。

過激派組織「イスラム国」(IS)の台頭などでシリア難民は急増し、国外に逃れた約400万人のうちレバノンには少なくとも約120万人いるとされる
