【オーランド銃乱射事件】2000キロを走って49本の十字架を届けた男 「伝えたい教訓がある」

「日曜日に教会から帰宅して、すぐに作業に取り掛かって、夜中まで働きました。あっという間の一日でした」

アメリカ・イリノイ州シカゴに住む65歳の大工グレッグ・ザニスさんは、6月12日にフロリダ州オーランドのナイトクラブで起きた銃乱射事件の犠牲者に敬意を払おうと心を動かされた。

ザニスさんは、49体の十字架を届けるためミニトラックで1200マイル(約2000キロ)の道のりを走った。ナイトクラブ「パルス」で起きた悲劇的な事件で命を落とした犠牲者一人一人のために、オーランドの現場まで向かった。テレビ局「CBSマイアミ」によると、ザニスさんは、一つ一つの十字架をすべて自ら手作りした。十字架で犠牲者を追悼するのは、ある重要な教訓を示しつつ、犠牲者をいたわる自分なりのやり方だと、ザニスさんは語る。

ザニスさんはテレビ局「NBCマイアミ」に、「今伝えたいのは、兄弟を愛し、隣人を愛すこと。彼らを裁いてはいけません」と語った。

CBSマイアミによると、ザニスさんは現場近くのオーランド総合保健医療センターの外に十字架を設置した。一つ一つの十字架には、犠牲者の名前が記され、赤い木製のハートが付いている。また、十字架の土台部分にはペンが置いてあり、人々が愛に溢れたメッセージや支援の言葉を書き込めるようになっている。

自らの作業場のガレージから木材をかき集め、十字架を作ったザニスは、銃乱射事件が発生した直後から作業に取り掛かったと。

ザニスさんの十字架は、現場近くを通った通行人から賞賛された。そして彼の心優しさに、フロリダ州知事のリック・スコットからも賛辞を受けた。

CNNによると、ザニスさんは義父を銃撃による負傷で亡くしている。そして過去の悲劇的な事件で命を落とした犠牲者たちにも同様の十字架を作り、痛ましい事件が起きたさまざまな場所を訪れている。十字架の多くは、銃による暴力で命を落とした犠牲者に向けられたものだ。

ザニスさんは、2012年7月にコロラド州オーロラで起きた銃乱射事件の犠牲者にも十字架を作り、銃撃が起こった映画館の前に設置した。また、同年12月コネチカット州ニュータウンで起きたサンディフック小学校淳乱射事件でも、犠牲者のために26体の十字架を作った。

USAトゥデー系列の新聞「テネシーアン」によると、ザニスさんはほかにも、2013年4月のボストンマラソン爆弾テロ事件や、1999年4月のコロンバイン高校銃乱射事件の犠牲者に向けても哀悼の意を示している。しかし、オーランドの十字架は、ザニスさんがこれまで手掛けたもののうち、最も犠牲者が多い追悼となった。

CBSマイアミによると、ザニスさんが作ったオーランドの十字架は最終的に犠牲者の家族の元に届けられるという。
