内部告発サイト「ウィキリークス」に機密情報を漏らしたとして起訴され、有罪とされた米陸軍上等兵マニング被告(25)に対し、東部メリーランド州の軍事法廷は8月21日、禁錮35年の判決を言い渡した。共同通信が伝えた。
時事通信によると、マニング被告は、情報分析官としてイラクに駐留していた2010年、軍事情報や公電など計70万点以上を不正に入手し、ウィキリークスに提供。アメリカ史上、最大規模の機密漏えい事件となった。
軍法会議は7月30日、マニング被告に対して20の罪状で有罪を宣告。同被告は最長で136年の禁錮刑に処される可能性があったが、軍法会議はその後、複数の罪状を併合する決定を下していた。
この事件はアメリカ史上最大規模の機密情報漏えい事件とされていて、検察側は「国の信頼に背いた裏切り者だ」として禁錮60年を求刑していたのに対し、マニング被告は「人々のためになると信じていたが、私の行為がアメリカを傷つけ、申し訳なく思っている」と謝罪していた。
軍法下では、マニング被告は刑期の3分の1を追えたところで仮釈放の資格が生まれるが、既に3年以上勾留されているため、計1293日の刑期が短縮され、9年後には仮釈放される可能性がある。
市民的自由を擁護するグループは判決を非難したが、ウィキリークスは「大きな戦略的勝利」として歓迎した。
