ヤンキース入りが決まった田中将大投手（25）は初年度から何勝できるのか。本人の投球と同じくらい重要となってくるのは、打線の出来だろう。昨季は貧打に苦しんだヤンキースだけに、大補強でテコ入れした攻撃陣のパワーアップに期待したいところだ。
■ 大補強でテコ入れしたヤンキース攻撃陣の構成
ヤンキース入りが決まった田中将大投手（25）は初年度から何勝できるのか。本人の投球と同じくらい重要となってくるのは、打線の出来だろう。昨季は貧打に苦しんだヤンキースだけに、大補強でテコ入れした攻撃陣のパワーアップに期待したいところだ。
米ケーブル局ESPN（電子版）では、名物記者のバスター・オルニー氏が各チームのラインアップのキーポイントについて分析。ヤンキースはカルロス・ベルトラン、ブライアン・マッキャンら主軸候補を獲得しただけに、ブレット・ガードナー、デレク・ジーターの起用法が重要になると見られている。
あらゆる要素を考えると、ガードナーはリードオフマンとして期待される新加入のジャコビー・エルズベリーの後を打つ完璧な2番打者だとオルニー氏は指摘する。キャリアの出塁率3割5分2厘と高く、昨季は1打席あたり4.23球を投げさせているが、これはア・リーグ6位に相当するという。
さらに、エルズベリーとガードナーのスピードは投手に重圧を与えられる。エルズベリーがセカンドまで達すれば、ガードナーはバントヒットを狙い、結果的に三塁に進めることが出来るというのだ。
ただ、ジョー・ジラルディー監督にとって、ガードナーを2番で起用することは簡単ではない。なぜなら、メジャー史上10位の安打数を誇るデレク・ジーターが復帰してくるからだ。昨季は左足首の負傷などで棒に振ったが、一昨年はメジャートップの安打数を記録しており、本当に衰えが来ているのかどうかは分からない。
おそらく、初めはジーターを2番で起用することになるだろう。今季、一昨年のような結果が出れば、ジーターは野球殿堂入りを確実なものにする。ただ、4月にヒットを量産できなければ、ガードナー（開幕は9番が濃厚と見られている）とポジションをチェンジするべきだと、オルニー氏は指摘する。
日本のファンにとっては、ここにイチローの話が全く出てこないことも寂しく感じるだろう。それだけ、今季は厳しい立場に置かれているということになる。田中を力強く援護する存在として、開幕までにポジションを奪ってほしいが、どうなるだろうか。
