アメリカの国内線でテロリストと疑われたのは、意外な人物だった。ハフィントンポストUS版などが報じた。

5月5日、アメリカン航空系のアメリカン・イーグル社の旅客機は、フィラデルフィアで離陸を待っていた。30代の女性客が搭乗を済ませて自分のシートに向かうと、隣席の黒くちぢれた髪の男性がメモ帳に奇妙な落書きのような物をずっと書き込んでいた。ニューヨーク州シラキュース行きの飛行機だったので、女性はその男性に「シラキュースにお住まいですか?」などと世間話をしたが、彼はそっけない態度で返事するのみだった

「この人はもしかしてテロリストでは?」。女性客は体調不良を理由にして飛行機を降り、「隣席に不審な男性がいた」と申したてた

こうして男性は、テロリストの疑いで空港の警備担当者の聴取を受けることになった。この男性、実はイタリア人のマクロ経済学者で、ペンシルベニア大学準教授のグイド・メンツィオさん。「奇妙な落書き」は講義で使う予定の微分方程式だった。

アメリカン航空の担当者によれば、操縦士は直ちに「女性客の勘違い」と理解し、航空機は約2時間遅れで出発したという。

2001年の同時多発テロ以降、航空機を使ったテロに非常にセンシティブになっているアメリカの国民性が垣間見えた騒動だった。
