男子ゴルフのメジャー第2戦、全米オープン選手権は6月18日、ウィスコンシン州エリンのエリンヒルズ（パー72）で最終ラウンドが行われ、6打差の14位からスタートした松山英樹は8バーディー、2ボギーの66と伸ばし、通算12アンダーの276で2位タイに入った。メジャー自己最高で、1980年全米オープンの青木功に並ぶ日本男子最高位となった。
賞金105万12ドル（約1億1700万円）を獲得し、世界ランキングは4位から自身の日本勢史上最高を塗り替える2位に上がった。
ブルックス・ケプカ（アメリカ）が67で回って通算16アンダーの272でメジャー初優勝。ブライアン・ハーマン（アメリカ）も4打差の2位。小平智は通算の通算3オーバーの46位、宮里優作は9オーバーで60位だった。
松山は試合後、「いいプレーができたので満足している。ここまで上位に来られたのはうれしい。ただ2日間はよくなかったので、もう少しできたのではないかという気持ちもある」と話した。
