ワシントン・ポストによると、ニコルズさんはドイツのユダヤ人家庭に生まれ、7歳のときにナチス・ドイツの迫害から逃れてアメリカに移住した。シカゴ大学を中退してに芸能界に入り、コメディアンなどとして活動したあと、映画監督として数々の名作を生み出した。1967年公開の「卒業」でオスカー賞の最優秀監督賞を受賞した。
