「現代の奴隷」は、思った以上に大きな問題となっているのかもしれない。
10月17日、現代の奴隷問題を解決する活動を行う「ウォークフリー・ファウンデーション」（WFF。本部・オーストラリア）が発表した報告書「世界奴隷指標」で明らかになったよると、世界で2900万人以上が奴隷として生活しているという。この数字はアメリカ合衆国の試算による2700万人、国際労働機関（ILO)の試算による2100万人よりも多い数字だ。
「奴隷の問題は歴史の遺物として考えると気休めにはなるかもしれない。しかし、人類が残した傷跡は、世界のどの大陸にも依然として存在する」WFFのCEO、ニック・グロノ氏はハフィントンポストに声明を寄せた。この団体は2012年に発足した。今もなお奴隷の慣習が蔓延しているという認識を広めることで現代の奴隷問題を終わらせる、さらに、奴隷に対する世界の政府の取り組み（あるいは失敗）を周知させることを目的としている。
WFFは世界の162カ国を、以下の3つの要素に基づいてランク付けを行った。
仮に自分たちが借金によって束縛されて強制的に結婚や労働を強いられる犠牲者となったとしたら、それはすなわち「奴隷として生きる」ことになる――この指標は、世界の子供と大人にそんなことを考えさせるものになっている。
国内に占める「現代の奴隷」の割合がもっとも高いのは、西アフリカのモーリタニアだ。報告書によると、モーリタニアの総人口370万人のうちおよそ20％が奴隷として従事している。その多くが世襲のシステムとなっている。
人口に占める奴隷の割合が高い10カ国のなかで、インドは4位となっている。しかし、実際の人数で言えば、インドは奴隷状態のおかれている人がもっとも多いうにとなる。その数は、1330〜1470万人である。
