「リトルヤンゴン」とも呼ばれる高田馬場。そこで人気のレストランを営むミャンマー難民の激動人生とは。

日本のミャンマー「リトルヤンゴン」からの挑戦

ミャンマー(ビルマ)人が多く集まり、ミャンマー用品店やレストランが20店舗以上集まる高田馬場は、「リトルヤンゴン」とも呼ばれていることをご存知ですか?現在、高田馬場を含む新宿区には約1,500人のミャンマー出身の方が生活しているといわれています。

民主化が進むと報じられるミャンマーですが、母国に永住帰国しようとする人は一部。民主化に対して不安が残るだけでなく、日本での長い暮らしで生活基盤ができている人も多いためです。リトルヤンゴンに足を運ぶ日本人も増えています。ミャンマー料理ファンはもちろん、企業のミャンマー進出にあたって言葉が必要となった会社員がミャンマー語教室に通う姿も見られます。

メニューは80種以上!難民が起業したレストラン『Swe Myanmar』

数多くあるミャンマー料理店の中でも人気が高いレストランに、Swe Myanmar(スィゥ・ミャンマー)があります。このレストランはミャンマーから逃れてきた難民、タン・スィゥさんが2012年に開業しました。メニューが豊富で、炊き込みご飯のダンバウや麺料理モヒンガーなど、なんと80種以上。すべて妻のタン・タンさんによるものです。多くのミャンマー人の憩いの場となっており、日本人の会社員や学生にも大人気です。

オーナーのタン・スィゥさんは1989年に軍事政権下のミャンマーから日本に逃れました。地質学者だったタン・スィゥさんは、1988年に大規模に行われた民主化運動の際、タイ国境付近で活動家を支援し、責任者も務めました。しかし、治安当局からの危険を察知してタイへ出国し、来日。1997年に難民認定されました。日本では都内の建設会社で25年近く働いたのち、会社の移転を機にレストランの開業を決意。現在は妻と、日本生まれの2人の子どもたちと暮らしています。Swe Myanmarではタン・スィゥさんの長女がウェイターとして笑顔でテキパキと働いています。もともと賑やかなレストランですが、彼女が働くことでさらに店が明るくなります。

看板メニュー「ダンバウ」を食べてみた!

Swe Myanmar の看板メニューといえば、ミャンマー風炊き込みご飯の「ダンバウ」。スパイスの効いたご飯の上に大きなホロホロのチキンがのったミャンマーの伝統料理です。

レストランを訪れていたミャンマー出身の方も注文していました。故郷を思い出す味なのかもしれません。ダンバウは大きなお皿で出てくるのですが、1人でもぺろりと平らげられるおいしさです!お店に足を運んだときにはぜひ食べてみてください。

「難民起業家」を支えるESPREって?

Swe Myanmarは難民起業サポートファンド(ESPRE)が支援しています。ESPREはマイクロファイナンスと経営支援を通じて、日本で起業を目指す「難民起業家」を支える機関で、JARも立ち上げに関わりました。

Swe Myanmar には、融資に加えてメニューやプロモーション、接客などへのアドバイスや、税理士とともに税務・会計の支援も行っています。家族だけで立ち上げた店ですが、売上は順調にのび、最近はアルバイトも雇うことができるようになりました。レストランによって、一家の生活を支えるだけでなく、コミュニティを盛り上げ、さらには雇用の創出にもつながり、さまざまな形で日本社会に貢献しています。

タン・スィゥさんに続き起業で挑戦しようとする方々が他にもいます。難民起業家の熱意に応え、難民の生活を改善し、ひいては日本社会の変革を目指して、ESPREは現在、クラウドファンディング「READYFOR?」に挑戦中です。応援よろしくお願いします!
