女子サッカーのワールドカップ・カナダ大会で6月23日（日本時間24日）、FIFAランキング4位のなでしこジャパンが12位のオランダを撃破し、2大会連続のベスト8入りを果たした。スポニチなどが報じた。
日刊スポーツによると、日本は前半10分に主将のMF宮間あやの左クロスを、FW大儀見優季がヘディングシュート。これはバーにはじかれたが、相手DFのクリアをDF有吉佐織が右足でシュート、ゴール左へ突き刺した。後半33分にはMF阪口夢穂が左ミドルシュートを決めて2－0とリード。ロスタイムに1点を返されたが、何とか逃げ切った。
佐々木則夫監督は「すいません、最後いつもハラハラドキドキさせてしまって。でも選手は最後まで頑張ってくれたので、これを弾みに次のオーストラリア戦に臨みたい」と話したという。
