7月4日に行われたサッカー・ワールドカップブラジル大会準々決勝のブラジル対コロンビア戦で、ブラジル代表の10番FWのネイマール選手が脊椎を骨折し、今大会の復帰が絶望的となった。
後半43分、ネイマール選手がボールをキープしようとした際、ジャンプしてきた相手チームの選手のひざが背中に当たり転倒。苦悶の表情を浮かべその場で動けなくなったネイマール選手は、担架でピッチの外へと運ばれた。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。
チームドクターは回復には少なくとも2週間はかかるとの見込みを示したという。
チームドクターはネイマールが病院に搬送された後、「手術が必要なほどの重症ではないが、回復するためには患部を固定する必要がある」と説明。回復には少なくとも２週間はかかるとの見込みを示した。

脊椎は上半身を支える柱となる骨で、頸椎（けいつい）、胸椎（きょうつい）、腰椎（ようつい）、仙骨（せんこつ）からなる。朝日新聞デジタルは、ネイマール選手は「第3腰椎」の突起にひびが入っていると報じている。
