テニスの全豪オープン第8日は1月26日、メルボルンで行われ、男子シングルス4回戦は、第5シードの錦織圭（日清食品）が世界ランキング10位で第9シードのダビド・フェレール（スペイン）と対戦。錦織は6-3、6-3、6-3のストレートで勝利し、2012年以来3年ぶりの準々決勝進出を果たした。
錦織は第1セットからストローク戦でフェレールを圧倒し、反撃の機会を与えなかった。スポニチなどが報じた。
第２セットは、いきなりサービスゲームをブレークされたが、すぐにブレークバック。４―３で迎えた第８ゲームでフェレールのサービスゲームをブレークし、そのまま押し切った。続く第３セットはいきなりフェレールのサービスゲームをブレーク。その後は互いにサービスゲームが続いたが、５―３で迎えた第９ゲームをブレークして決着をつけた。
錦織は、全豪初の４強入りがかかる準々決勝では前年覇者で、第４シードのスタン・ワウリンカ（２９＝スイス）と対戦する。

錦織は試合後のインタビューで「きょうはよいプレーができたと思う。この前の3試合も好調だったので、自信を深めていた。きょうは勝てて本当にうれしかった。（次のワウリンカは）世界で最も厳しい対戦相手の一人。よい試合をしたいと思う」と話した。
