菅義偉官房長官は2月12日午前7時55分ごろ、北朝鮮西岸から弾道ミサイルが発射され、日本海に落下したと見られると発表した。日本の排他的経済水域（EEZ）内ではないと推定され、現時点では航空機や船舶への被害は確認されていないという。
北朝鮮が弾道ミサイルを発射したのは2016年11月、アメリカ大統領選挙でトランプ氏が勝利してから初めて。
北朝鮮をめぐっては10日午後（日本時間11日未明）に開かれた安倍首相とアメリカのトランプ大統領との首脳会談で、共同声明を発表。北朝鮮に対し、核や弾道ミサイルの開発計画を放棄し、さらなる挑発行動を取らないよう求めていた。今回の弾道ミサイル発射は、日米共同声明への反発を示した可能性がある。
