ドイツ政府がアメリカ国家安全保障局(NSA)がドイツのメルケル首相の携帯電話の通話を傍受していた可能性がある声明を発表したことに関連し、イギリスの新聞「ガーディアン」は10月24日、NSAが世界のリーダー35人の通話を傍受していたと伝えた。

ハフィントンポストUK(イギリス)版によると、NSAの内部告発を行ったエドワード・スノーデン氏の流出文書から発覚したという。ガーディアン紙が入手した極秘メモには、NSAがホワイトハウス、国務省、ペンタゴン(アメリカ国防総省)などの政府高官に対して、彼らの「ローロデックス」(訳注・アメリカの卓上回転式名刺入れメーカー。アメリカでは個人情報の代名詞として使われる)にアクセスするよう促している。その中には、海外の政府首脳の電話番号も含まれていたという。

あるアメリカの政府高官は200の電話番号をNSAに伝えた。中には、名前は伝わっていないが35人の政府首脳も含まれ、NSAによる傍受が即座に「実行された」という。

この暴露によって、アメリカ政府と主要なヨーロッパの緊張が高まることが予想される。

今回の「ガーディアン」紙の報道は、ハフィントンポストUS版UK版フランス版などでもトップで伝えられている。
