■オバマ氏「同じ時代に生きたことを、神に感謝したい」

オバマ氏は声明の中で「世界中の人々と同じように、ミシェルと私はアリ氏の死を嘆いている。しかし、たとえ少しの間でも彼を知ることができ、最も偉大な者と同じ時代を生きたことを幸運に思い、神に感謝している」と深い哀悼の意を示した。その上で「(アリ氏は)リングの外でも、人々の権利のためにも戦ってきた。あの困難な時代に、キング牧師や南アフリカの大統領となったマンデラ氏とともに立ち上がった」「彼の戦いは困難で、周囲から敵視され、刑務所に送られそうにもなったが、彼が勝ち取ったものが、我々の知る現在のアメリカとなっている」と、黒人差別の撤廃を訴えた公民権運動におけるアリ氏の貢献を称えた。

オバマ氏はTwitterで、アリ氏が対戦相手をノックアウトしたときの写真のそばに座る自身の写真を公開。「彼は世界を揺さぶり、よりよいものにした。チャンピオンよ、安らかに眠れ」とコメントした。

■トランプ氏「世界中が悲しんでいる」クリントン氏「最も偉大な人だった」

アリ氏の死去には、アメリカ大統領選の候補者もTwitterで反応した。共和党の候補者指名を確定させたドナルド・トランプ氏は「真の王者で、素晴らしい男だった。世界中が悲しんでいる」と追悼。また、民主党の候補者指名をほぼ確実にしているクリントン氏も「最も偉大な人だった」とその死を悼んだ。
