リオデジャネイロ・オリンピックのバドミントン女子シングルスで、奥原希望（のぞみ、21）が銅メダルを獲得する見通しとなった。
奥原は8月18日の準決勝でインド代表の選手に0-2で敗退。19日の3位決定戦に回った。しかし、対戦相手だった中国の李雪ゼイ（25）が棄権したため、奥原の不戦勝となり、銅メダルが確定した。
中国の国営新華社通信によると、李は準決勝の試合中、第2セットで左ひざを痛めた。ヘッドコーチによると、前十字靱帯と外側半月板を損傷したという。
NHKニュースによると、バドミントンのシングルスで日本代表がメダルを獲得するのは史上初となる。
