2020年東京オリンピックの追加種目について、大会組織委員会は9月28日、有識者の検討会議を開き、野球・ソフトボールなど5競技18種目をIOC（国際オリンピック委員会）に提案することを決めた。スポニチなどが報じた。
追加種目は以下の通り。
野球・ソフトボール
空手
ローラースポーツ
スポーツクライミング
サーフィン

日刊スポーツによると、追加種目は2016年8月に開催されるIOC総会の投票で正式決定される。決定すれば野球・ソフトボールは2008年北京オリンピック以来の復帰、その他の4競技は初のオリンピック実施競技となる。種目の内訳は、野球・ソフトボールで1競技として統合して2種目に、空手は男女の組手と形を合わせた8種目、スケートボード4種目、スポーツクライミングは2種目、サーフィンは2種目となる。
最終選考に残っていた8競技のうち、ボウリング、スカッシュ、武術は落選した。
