2016年のノーベル医学生理学賞は、東京工業大学栄誉教授の大隅良典さん（71）に決まった。10月3日、ノーベル財団が発表した。
大隅さんは、細胞が不要になった自分のたんぱく質を分解してリサイクルする「オートファジー（自食作用）」と呼ばれる仕組みを解明した。1993年にこの仕組みを制御している遺伝子を世界で初めて発見している。共同通信によると、細胞に異常があるとがんやアルツハイマー病などにつながるため、細胞が正常な働きを保つための仕組みで、今後の薬品開発に役立つと期待される研究が評価された。
日本出身者のノーベル賞受賞者は、アメリカ国籍の取得者を含め3年連続25人目。医学生理学賞は利根川進・理化学研究所脳科学総合研究センター長、山中伸弥・京都大教授、2015年の大村智・北里大特別栄誉教授に続き2年連続4人目となる。
NHKニュースによると、大隅さんは福岡県出身。県立福岡高校から東京大学教養学部へ進み、卒業後はアメリカ・ロックフェラー大学に留学した。1972年に東京大で理学博士号を取得し、教養学部助教授、基礎生物研究所（愛知県岡崎市）教授、総合研究大学院大学教授などを経て、2014年から現職。
