パキスタン北西部カイバル・パクトゥンクワ州ペシャワルで１６日、軍が運営する学校を武装グループが襲い銃を乱射、児童や生徒ら１３０人以上が死亡し、１２０人以上が負傷する大惨事となった。
武装グループは生徒や教師を人質に立てこもり、軍部隊と銃撃戦になったが、事件発生から約８時間後に軍が制圧、武装グループのメンバー９人全員が殺害された。
イスラム武装勢力「パキスタンのタリバン運動（ＴＴＰ）」が犯行を認めた。ＴＴＰはノーベル平和賞を受賞したマララ・ユスフザイさん（１７）を約２年前に襲撃した勢力。ＴＴＰのスポークスマンは「政府がわれわれの家族や女性を攻撃しているため、軍の学校を標的に選んだ。彼らに痛みを味わわせてやりたかった」と述べた。
襲撃された学校は軍が運営しており、軍関係者の子弟も多い。地元の病院によると、犠牲になったのは１０歳から２０歳までの児童や生徒などとみられている。
マララさんは、声明を発表し「こうした無分別で冷血なテロ行為が起きてしまい、わたしの胸は悲しみでつぶれてしまいそうだ」と述べた。
