パナソニック、国内スマホ事業から撤退 スマホシフトに乗り遅れ

9月26日、パナソニックが国内向けスマホ事業から撤退すると発表した。より利益率の高い法人向けスマホに注力する。

携帯電話は子会社の「パナソニックモバイルコミュニケーションズ」(PMC)が担当しているが、10月1日付で同社が持つモバイル通信などの技術や人的資源を戦略的に見直し。企業向け携帯電話の開発・推進やAV情報分野関連の共通技術開発を中心に再配置する。

スマホが台頭する前、携帯電話が急激に普及した90年代後半から2000年代は、NTTドコモなど通信事業者のサービス仕様に従って端末を企画・製造し、通信事業者が買い上げるモデルで安定して利益を挙げていたが、Apple、サムスンなどスマホが台頭し苦戦を強いられた。

今年の夏モデルでは、ドコモがサムスンとソニーの2機種を重点的に販売する「ツートップ戦略」を採ったほか、9月にはiPhoneの導入も決定。通信事業者の“国内メーカー離れ”は決定的な流れとなった。

パナソニック本体も2012年度で7,721億円、2013年3月期は7,542億円と巨額の赤字を出したため、経営の見直しの対象になったが、津賀一宏社長は今年3月、「事業撤退という安易な選択は取らない」と明言していた。

赤字の止血についてだが、事業から撤退して止めるというのは、ほんとうに最後の判断。いろんな意味において、まずい状況が撤退ということ。今日、テレビについては、2015年度に赤字を解消するという話をした。単に撤退だけしたら赤字は消える。そうではなく、なんとか事業を継続しながら、赤字を消すという決意。携帯電話についても同じ。事業撤退という安易な選択は採らない。ただ、赤字の垂れ流しは止めるということは明確に表明する。

だが、2013年度に入ってからもスマホ部門の赤字幅は改善せず、撤退の判断を下すに至った。
