手が震え、体がこわばる難病「パーキンソン病」の治療に、体内にある一酸化窒素(NO)が役立つ可能性があることを奈良県立医大や京都大、三重大のチームが突き止め、16日付の英科学誌サイエンティフィック・リポーツ電子版に発表した。共同通信が伝えた。
パーキンソン病は、1817年にイギリスの医師ジェームズ・パーキンソンが初めて報告した病気。中脳の黒質という部位にあるメラニン細胞の変性・萎縮と大脳基底核の病変により起こる。高年齢者に多く、ふるえや、筋肉がこわばったりするなどの症状が現れる。表情は仮面のようになり、次いで身体が前傾し、歩幅が小刻みになる特徴的な歩行障害もある。
厚生労働省の推計で患者は約14万人と言われる。症状が進むと、歩きづらくなり、転びやすくなる。40歳以下の発症が若年性パーキンソン病となる。薬で症状を抑えるが、飲み続けるうち効果のある時間が短くなる。薬が効く「オン」と効かない「オフ」の時間を繰り返す。オンは明るいがオフは気分が落ち込んだりする。（コトバンク「パーキンソン病」より）
一酸化窒素は、パーキンソン病によって機能しなくなるタンパク質「パーキン」をよく働くようにし、神経細胞を保護することが分かり、三重大のチームは「NOを増やす薬剤を開発できれば、新たな治療薬となり得る」としている。
一方で、iPS細胞(人工多能性幹細胞)を利用したパーキンソン病治療の可能性も模索されている。
朝日新聞デジタルによると、iPS細胞から神経の細胞をつくり、パーキンソン病の患者の脳に移植する新しい治療法について、京都大iPS細胞研究所の高橋淳教授は6月6日、早ければ来年度にも臨床研究の実施を国に申請する意向を明らかにした。
iPS細胞は増殖する能力が高く、神経細胞の量を確保しやすいため、脊髄(せきずい)損傷などと並んでiPS細胞を使う再生医療の有力な目標とされてきた。文部科学省が昨年度発表したロードマップ(行程表)では、臨床研究の開始を「3～5年後」としている。
