ペレは、史上最高のサッカー選手として広く知られている。この身長172cm、73歳のブラジルのスターは、3度のワールドカップ優勝を勝ち取った唯一のプレーヤーだ。

著名なアメリカの芸術家、アンディ・ウォーホルの言葉は実に的を得ている。いわく、「ペレは私の説を否定する数少ない人物だった」、すなわち「名声はたった15分間にとどまらず、15世紀にわたって続くだろう」と[訳注・ウォーホルはかつて「将来、誰でも15分は世界的な有名人になれるだろう」という名言を残している]

1999年、ペレは国際オリンピック委員会から、「20世紀を代表するスポーツ選手」に選ばれた。また、タイム誌は、「20世紀における最も影響力のあった人物100人」の一人に選んでいる。

新プロジェクト「真実のペレ」を映像化するにあたって、彼はハフィントンポストUS版に対し、ワールドカップ、アメリカサッカー界の現状、さらにペレの再来をピッチ上で見ることができるか、などについての意見を述べた。

――制作中どれくらいカメラを意識しましたか?また、普段の生活では、どれくらい意識していますか?

私のスタートはとても若くて16歳の時からなので、あまり気になりません。心掛けていることは、ファンや私の後に続く人たちに対し、ベストな状態で応えていくことです。このことにはとても満足しています。

――あなたにとって、世界中のどれくらいのファンと接触できるかという点でこのプロジェクトはどのような意味がありますか?

それはいつも心掛けています。17歳のとき、スウェーデン・ナショナルチームとの試合で競技を始めました。17歳ですよ。それからもう3世代にもわたっています。今では私の人生そのものです。今と違う人生を考えたとき、それはきっと辛い日々であったでしょう。そんな生活には馴染めません。

――いつもたくさんのカメラの取り囲まれていて、どうやって普段の自分を保つのですか?

やっぱり家庭ですね。結婚してから3人の子供ができいつも一緒、これが今の私の生活です。いつも家族と一緒です。快適だと思える人生は、肉親、家族、わが子たちと過ごすことではないでしょうか。

――今のサッカーは、あなたの頃と比べるとどう違いますか? ゲームのスピードとか、パワーとかですか?

私の頃よりずい分違いがあります。まず、私の頃にはいわゆる「一流の待遇」というものがありませんでした。設備もないし、靴もユニフォームも、満足にありませんでした。それが今ではどうですか、移動はジェット機ですよ。ヨーロッパでは、移動はバスでした。でも今でも変わっていないことがあります。それは試合場の中です。常に「いい選手」でなければならないのです。

――あなたの名声はアメリカサッカー界の発展のために大いに貢献しました。ニューヨーク・コスモスに在籍していたからです。これはあなたとあなたの軌跡にとってどのような意味がありますか?

おおいに意味があります。私の後継者は3世代にも及びます。大切なことは、私がサッカーをやってきたのは、アメリカだけのためではなく全世界のためだということです。ニューヨーク・コスモスでサッカーを普及させようとした当時、アメリカにサッカーは存在していましたが、それは全く違うものでした。人々はあまりサッカーに注目してくれませんでした。それでも扉を押しひろげたのです。7~8年か、20年かかるかもしれませんが、サッカーはアメリカでのビッグ・スポーツになるでしょう。さらに、大学などでは女性選手がとても増えましたね。とても誇らしく思います。

――アメリカは何をすれば本当のサッカー大国、いわゆる次のステップに進めるのでしょうか?

アメリカの競技レベルは素晴らしく高いと思いますが、人々はワールドカップを勝ち取ったり、試合に勝った時だけしか思い出しません。前回のワールドカップではアメリカはとてもいいチームでした。今後もこれを期待したいですね。

――ブラジルが直面しているプレッシャーについてどう思いますか。ホスト国として、ワールドカップ優勝へのプレッシャーについて。このようなプレッシャーをどう分析しますか?

とても大きなプレッシャーです。ファンは優勝を望んでいますがそんなに簡単ではありません。まず、ブラジルはどこよりも多く優勝しているということです。内心ではブラジル優勝を期待しますが、参加チームすべてに対し敬意を払い、注意するべきと思います。なぜならサッカーにはサプライズがいっぱいですから。世界のチームのレベルはほとんど同じと言えるでしょう、横一線です。楽な試合などありません。相手はアメリカであろうが、中国であろうが、試合はすべて厳しいものです。それでもブラジルの人は心配しません。何においても、心から優勝を願っているのです。

――今の選手で、ご自分を見るような選手はいますか?例えば母国のネイマール選手、あなたと同じ名誉の背番号10番のユニフォームを着ていますが

今の時代、私のようにプレーできる選手はそれなりにいるでしょうが、私のような選手はいないでしょう。なぜなら、両親はマシントレーニングを禁止していたからです。そのためずっとボール相手のトレーニングをしてきました。ご質問に答えましょう。確かに素晴らしい選手はいます。昔はもっと多くの名選手がいました。それに比べると今は少ないです。ネイマール、クリスティアーノ・ロナウド、それにリオネル・メッシを入れても、せいぜい3~4人ですね。5人挙げることさえ、ひと苦労です。

――今の選手が使っている設備や移動手段の質について語っていましたね。今の同じ待遇を得ていたなら、どれくらいもっといいプレーができていましたか?

今の設備やサポートがあればもっといいプレーができていたでしょう。私はよく「神様が1000ゴールを決めるチャンスをくれたらなあ」と言っていました。今の環境なら2000ゴールは決められたでしょう。

――ブラジルがワールドカップホスト国であることをどう思いますか?

素晴らしいことです。特に若くて、新しい世代の人々を誇らしく思います。スウェーデンで最初のワールドカップに出たとき、皆知らない人ばかりでした。現地に到着したとき、みんなブラジルがどこにあるかも知りませんでした。「ブラジルってアルゼンチンのことだよ」とか言っていました。今ではみんなブラジルを知っています。世界でも存在感のある国の一つです。ここが出発点であることを誇らしくも思います。
