ペルーにある4〜5000年前につくられたピラミッドが不動産業者によって破壊され、さら地にされてしまった。
このピラミッドはペルーのエルパライソにあり、南北アメリカ大陸で最も古い遺跡の一つ。ペルー文化省によると、この不動産業者は高さ6メートル、広さ2500平方メートルの建造物を解体した後、がれきの上にごみをまいて火を付けたと、ブルームバーグ日本語版が伝えている。
BBCによると、不動産業者には「回復不能の損害」を与えた責任があると考古学者が語っている。宗教的な儀式に使われていたのではないかと考えられていた。しかし、解明されていなかった点も多く、調査に当たっていた考古学者は「どのように作られたのかなどを知ることができなくなった」と話したという。
また、ブルームバーグ米国版によると、このピラミッドはエジプトのピラミッドや英イングランドのストーンヘンジよりも前から存在していたとみられる。ペルー文化省のメールでの声明によると、不動産業者は他の11のピラミッドの一部も破壊しようとしたため、警察当局によって逮捕された。最長で8年の禁錮刑になるという。
5月には、中米ベリーズにある古代マヤ文明の遺跡で、2300年前に建造されたピラミッドがショベルやブルドーザーで破壊される事件があったばかり。遺跡で使われていた石灰岩を道路の舗装材として使う目的で建設業者が破壊してしまったことをCNNが伝えている。
