旧日本軍のトンネルに避難、２４人無事 フィリピン台風
台風３０号で多数の死者が出たフィリピン中部レイテ島で、太平洋戦争中に旧日本軍がつくった地下トンネルに２４人が避難し、助かっていたことがわかった。地元住民にとって忌まわしい占領時代の遺物が、シェルターとして役だった。
レイテ島中部ブラウエン。倒れたココナツの木が並ぶガマイ村の山の斜面に、高さ約２メートル、幅約１・５メートルの穴が二つあいている。コの字形の地下トンネルの入り口と出口だ。内部はコンクリートで固められ、暗く、ひんやりとしている。長さは２５メートルほどで、途中に２畳ほどの部屋が二つあった。
フロレンシオ・イチョン村長（６２）によると、旧日本軍が占領時代につくったもので、米軍との戦闘の前線拠点などとして使われていた。
台風が上陸した１１月８日朝、周囲から人々がトンネルに集まりだした。様子を見に来た近所の女性（３０）によると、暴風で屋根がなくなった家の住民ら計２４人だった。トンネル内には雨も風も入り込まず、住民らは台風が去るのを待って自宅に戻ったという。
イチョン村長（６２）の父は抗日ゲリラだった。旧日本軍の話を父から聞いており、「トンネルは恐ろしい時代を連想させる存在だった。それが村人の命を救うとは」と複雑な表情を浮かべた。
