「100年に一度」咲く植物が開花　アメリカ・カリフォルニア大学

「１００年に一度咲く」と言われるパイナップル科の大型の植物、プヤ・ライモンディが、米カリフォルニア大学バークレー校の植物園で開花を迎えている。 別名「アンデスの女王」とも呼ばれるこの植物は、野生では８０─１００年に１回開花する。

［バークレー（米カリフォルニア州） ５日 ロイター］ - 「１００年に一度咲く」と言われるパイナップル科の大型の植物、プヤ・ライモンディが、米カリフォルニア大学バークレー校の植物園で開花を迎えている。

別名「アンデスの女王」とも呼ばれるこの植物は、野生では８０─１００年に１回開花する。今回花を咲かせているのは、同植物園に２４年前に植えられたもの。

同植物園でプヤ・ライモンディが開花するのはこれで２回目。１９８０年代後半の最初の開花時には、数千人が見に訪れたという。

同園のスポークスマンによると、プヤ・ライモンディは高さ約９メートルに成長し、満開時には３万個もの花をつけると期待されている。
