ポートランドでは、およそ4000人の人々が路上で寝ている。2014年夏以来、ホームレスの人々の生活はますます厳しくなってきている。

2月10日の夜、ポートランド市庁舎にやって来た抗議者のグループは、干し草用三つ又とたいまつを手に掲げた。デモを主催したジェシー・スポーンベルグ氏は「市長よ、恥を知って行動に移せ」と、地元紙「オレゴニアン」に語った。

ホームレスを犯罪者として扱うのはやめろ!

オレゴニアンによると、ポートランド市は、歩道に座っているホームレスの人々を市警が退去させることを可能にする法案を復活させようとしている。地元紙「ポートランド・マーキュリー」によると、2014年7月、チャーリー・ヘイルズ市長はホームレスのキャンプ場からの退去に乗り出した。

暖かい衣類や毛布といった、ホームレスの人々の数少ない所有物を市警が処分することになるため、キャンプ場を撤去したら、路上で生活している人々の状況はかなり悪化することになると、請願サイト「Change.org」には記されている。

しかし、ヘイルズ市長は8月、一時避難所用の予算を増額し、ホームレスの人々がいるキャンプ場にいるホームレスの人々を取り締まる計画があるとオレゴニアンに述べた。しかし、市長は予算額に関しては態度を明らかにしなかった。

「この予算は、ホームレスの問題に関するものではありません。違法行為に関することなのです」と、キャンプ場の撤去法案について市長は述べた。

ホームレスを支援する人たちの大半は大規模な対策について懸念の声を上げていたが、支持団体のひとつ「フィルム・ザ・ポリス・ポートランド」は、抗議文を配る以上の抗議を行った。

2月10日夜、約50人のグループが、干し草用三つ又とたいまつを手に掲げながら市庁舎前でデモを行った。凍死したホームレスの人々の数を表わすために、彼らは周囲の庭園を共同墓地の景色に変えた、とスポーンベルグ氏は自身のFacebookに記した。

「そう、警官たちはキャンプ場を一掃しようとしている。こんなおかしな世の中で、ホームレスの人たちがやっとの思いで作り上げてきた、普通の生活に最も身近なものを破壊しているんだ」と、スポーンベルグ氏はFacebookに記した。「彼らが持っているもの全部をゴミ箱に放り投げている。そして、警官たちは頭が悪いからこんなことをやっているわけじゃないんだよ。彼らは頭も悪いかもしれないが、こうすることで認められるんだよ。今回は、ヘイルズ市長が決めたように、市の政策にしたがって、ただ自分たちの仕事をやっているだけなんだよ」
