ダーイシュ（イスラム国）が5月17日、イラク西部の主要都市ラマディを制圧したことを受けて、政府の要請を受けたイスラム教シーア派の民兵がおよそ3000人集結し、奪還をめざすとみられる。AP通信が報じた。
ダーイシュは１７日、イラク西部のラマディを完全に制圧したと表明し、イラク軍の戦車を接収し、同軍の兵士「数十人」を殺害したとしている。
ラマディは、首都バグダッドの北西に115キロ離れた拠点都市で、スンニ派が大半を占めるアンバル州の州都。ロイターによると、州知事報道官はこの数日間の戦闘でおよそ500人が死亡し、さらに6000〜8000人が家から避難したと述べた。

AP通信によると、イラクのハイダル・アバディ首相もシーア派で、今回の民兵派兵は、イラク国内での宗派対立が激化する恐れがあるとしている。
