トルコ西部のエーゲ海で1月30日、ギリシャに難民を運んでいた船が転覆し、ロイターは約40人が死亡、75人が救助されたと伝えた。

トルコの海洋警察当局は救助・捜索活動を続けている。船は全長17メートルで、少なくとも120人を運んでいたとみられる。乗船していたのはシリア、アフガニスタン、ミャンマー出身者で、死亡したうち5人は子供だという。

AP通信によると、船はレスボス島を目指してトルコを出航したが、直後に沈没したという。当時の気候は比較的穏やかだったと言うが、船の規模が海峡の航行に適していなかったとみられる。少なくとも10人の子供が乗っていたという証言もあり、犠牲者はさらに増える恐れもある。

シリアなどからギリシャを経由してヨーロッパをめざす難民が、海峡で死亡する事故が相次いでおり、AP通信は1月だけですでに250人以上が死亡したと伝えている。
