人気スパイ映画「007」シリーズで主人公のジェームズ・ボンド役で人気のあったイギリスの俳優、ロジャー・ムーアさんが5月23日、死去した。ムーアさんの公式Twitterで3人の子供が明らかにした。がんを患い、スイスで闘病中だった。89歳だった。
3人の息子は「短いが勇敢ながんとの闘いだった」と綴った。私生活では4人の女性と結婚。CNNによると、1993年に前立腺がんと診断されていた。
イギリスBBCなどによると、1927年、ロンドンで警察官の息子として生まれた。モデルから俳優に転じ、50年にアメリカに渡る。「雨の朝巴里に死す」（54年）などの映画に出演。テレビドラマの「アイバンホー」や「セイント／天国野郎」では主役に抜てきされ、人気を博した。
その後、3代目の公式ボンド役に抜擢され、1973年から85年まで出演した。出演したのは「死ぬのは奴らだ」（73年）、「黄金銃を持つ男」（74年）、「私を愛したスパイ」（77年）、「ムーンレイカー」（79年）、「ユア・アイズ・オンリー」（81年）、「オクトパシー」（83年）、「美しき獲物たち」（85年）の7作。歴代のボンド役で最多となる。
91年には国連児童基金（ユニセフ）親善大使となり、ボランティア活動にも積極的に関わった。02年サッカー・ワールドカップ日韓大会で来日した際に世界の子供の状況について講演を行った。こうした活動も評価され、03年にイギリスのエリザベス女王からナイトの爵位を、08年にはフランス政府から芸術文化勲章の最高章コマンドゥールをそれぞれ授与された。
CNNは、2014年のアメリアの公共ラジオNPRのインタビューとして次のように伝えた。
自身が演じたボンドについて、最もユーモアにあふれていたと振り返り、「私はコミカルな恋人役的で、それに比べればショーン（・コネリー）や今のダニエル・クレイグはまるで殺し屋だ。自分がダニエル・クレイグの悪口を言ったとしたら、暗い夜に彼と遭遇したくはない」と冗談めかして話していた。
