将来の国王となる第一子の男児を出産したイギリス王室のキャサリン妃(31)は23日夜(日本時間24日未明)、夫のウィリアム王子(31)とともに入院先のロンドンの病院を退院し、病院前で赤ちゃんを披露した。共同通信が伝えた。
キャサリン妃が赤ちゃんを抱き、ウィリアム王子が寄り添って病院から出てくると、集まった報道陣からカメラのフラッシュが一斉にたかれ、見物人から拍手と歓声が上がった。
NHKによると、ウィリアム王子は「大きな赤ちゃんでとても重いです。名前はまだ考えているところで、できるだけ早く皆さんにお伝えしたいと思っています。こうやってじっくり顔を見るのは私も初めてです。ありがたいことに顔は妻に似ています」と笑いながら答えていた。
一方、キャサリン妃は「とても感動的で特別な時間です。子どもを持つと、親というのは誰もがこういう気持ちになるのでしょう。夫も早速おむつを替えました」と話していた。
王子は赤ちゃんを乗せたチャイルドシートを車に取り付け、自ら運転して病院を後にした。
ロンドンには世界中のメディアが詰めかけ、祝砲が響いた。イギリスは久しぶりのロイヤルベビー誕生に沸いている。
