日本が南アフリカを相手に劇的な勝利を挙げた試合が、「ワールドカップ最高の瞬間」に選出された。

日本が南アフリカを相手に劇的な勝利を挙げた試合が、「ワールドカップ最高の瞬間」に選出された。ラグビーの国際統括団体「ワールドラグビー」が11月1日、インターネットのファン投票で選出されたと発表した。47NEWSなどが報じた。「最高の瞬間」部門は新設で、4つの候補から選出。日本戦は5割以上の票を集めたという。

ワールドカップ1次リーグの日本VS南アフリカの試合は、終了間際のトライで34―32と逆転する劇的な一戦となった。開催国の英国メディアも続々と報道。ガーディアンは「ラグビーの歴史上最大の衝撃。単なるスポーツの枠を越えて波紋が生じたことは間違いない」と報じ、テレグラフは「史上最大の番狂わせ」と伝えていた。

また、今大会のドリームチーム(ベストフィフティーン)には、五郎丸歩選手(ヤマハ発動機)が日本から初めて名を連ねた。五郎丸選手は1次リーグ4試合で合計58得点を挙げて、出場した20チームの全選手の中で2位に入っていた
