【ラグビー・ワールドカップ】日本代表、スコットランド戦に臨む 「まぐれでないことを証明したい」

ラグビー・ワールドカップに出場している日本代表は9月23日午後10時半(日本時間。現地時間は同午後2時半)、イングランド中南部の都市グロスターで第2戦のスコットランド戦を迎える。不動のキッカー、FB五郎丸歩らの活躍に期待が集まる。

初戦で優勝候補の南アフリカを破った日本は、22日に試合会場のキングスホルム・スタジアムで約1時間調整した。日刊スポーツによると、エディー・ジョーンズ・ヘッドコーチは「まぐれでないことを証明したい」と誓った。

練習後の会見でエディー・ジョーンズ・ヘッドコーチ(55)は「(地元の)新聞などでは南ア戦の勝利がまぐれだったのではという意見もある。そうでないことを証明したい」と話した。選手の体にあざや打撲が残っていると明かしつつ「集中できている。プレッシャーはない。速いテンポのアタックで勝負する」と語った。中3日だが、指揮官は「実力を裏付けできるパフォーマンスを見せたい」と勝利を誓った。

世界ランキング11位の日本代表に対し、スコットランドは12位。1886年に、初の国際協会となる国際ラグビー評議会(ラグビーボード、現・ワールドラグビー)の創設に名を連ねており、伝統的な強豪として知られる。対戦成績は日本の1勝7敗と、大きく負け越している。

唯一の勝利は1989年5月28日、秩父宮ラグビー場での親善試合。宿沢広朗監督の初試合となったこの試合で5トライを奪い、28-24で勝利を飾った。「初めて世界の一流国のナショナルチームに勝った」(1989年5月29日付読売新聞朝刊)と歓喜した。しかし、2回のワールドカップではいずれも大差で負けており、2004年11月には親善試合ながら8-100の歴史的大敗を喫している。

一方で2015年の欧州6カ国対抗では5戦全敗の最下位となり、ニュージーランド出身のバーン・コッター監督のもとで立て直しを図っている。コッター監督は「(南ア戦は)われわれが知っていることの多くを裏付ける試合だった。日本は自分たちがやることに信念があり、全力を注ぐ。おそらく20%はまだ温存しているだろう」と警戒を強めている
