アメリカに住むわれわれは、2006年のFIFAワールドカップ・ドイツ大会で、アメリカが敗北した時に味わった、ひどく悲しい気持ちをよく覚えている。心の中にぽっかりと穴が開いたような悲しみは、心の中をじわじわと蝕みながら広がっていった。
（おもにチーズピザを）やけ食いして、気持ちが元通りになるまでには、最低2日かかるのではないかと思われるほどだった。
われわれにもそのような経験があり、それがどれほど苦しいかを知っている。けれども同時に、落胆した表情から、公衆の面前で見せる涙にいたるまでの、悲しみの感情のさまざまな段階を捉えた以下のような写真を見ていきたいとも思ってしまうのだ。
