メッカ郊外のミナで9月24日、年1回の大巡礼(ハッジ)を行っていた多くのイスラム教徒が折り重なって倒れる事故が発生し、少なくとも717人が死亡、863人がけがをした。

事故現場はメッカ中心部から約9キロほど離れた聖地のひとつで、ハッジの3日目でイード・アルアドハー(犠牲祭)の初日にあたる。ミナでは巡礼者が悪魔を象徴する3本の石柱に投石する儀式が行われていた。ハフポストUK版によると、投石の儀式に向かう道路で巡礼者が割り込みをするなど殺到したことが原因とみられる。

ニューヨーク・タイムズによると、今回の事故は1990年にメッカからミナに通じるトンネルで1426人が死亡して以来最悪の規模となった。

サウジアラビアのハリド・アルファリフ保健相は「当局のガイドラインや指示を守らなかった巡礼者たちに原因がある」と批判した。

メッカでは11日、カーバ神殿があるモスク「マスジド・ハラーム」に巨大クレーンが倒れ、107人が死亡した事故が発生している。
