中東和平交渉に尽力し、1994年にノーベル平和賞を受賞したイスラエルのシモン・ペレス前大統領が9月28日、テルアビブ市内のテル・ハショメール病院でなくなった。93歳だった。エルサレム・ポストなどが報じた。

長年にわたってイスラエル政治の中心にいたペレス氏は、9月13日に脳卒中で倒れてから2週間後に亡くなった。

AP通信によると、イツィク・クレイス院長は「ペレス氏の脳内はかなり出血していた」と語った。治療にあたった医師たちは27日、イスラエルの地元紙「ハアレツ」に、「ペレス氏の容態が回復不能な状態になった」と話した。ペレス氏は最後、家族に看取られて亡くなったという。

ペレス氏はイスラエルの政治に最も長く関わった有力者だった。1959年に国会議員に初当選して以来、50年にわたり数多くの要職や閣僚を務めた。また、短期間だったが3度首相を務め、政治人生の最後の7年間は大統領となった。その間、ベンヤミン・ネタニヤフ氏が首相として在任していた。

ペレスは半世紀以上、イスラエル政治情勢に関わり続けた。

ペレス氏は1923年にポーランド(現ベラルーシ)のビシニエフ生まれ。1934年に家族と共にイギリス委任統治領のパレスチナへ移住した。

イスラエルの政治の基礎を築いた他の多くのメンバーと同じように、ペレスもイスラエル軍で重要な役割を務めた。53年に29歳で国防省長官に就任したペレス氏は、イスラエルの核開発で重要な役割を担った。また彼は国防大臣を2度務めた。

自身の政治キャリアを通じて、ペレス氏は重点を安全保障問題からイスラエル・パレスチナの和平プロセスへと移した。ペレス氏は1993年、外相としてオスロ合意で最も重要な役割を果たした。オスロ合意は、その当時パレスチナを代表していたパレスチナ解放機構(PLO)との間で交わしたもので、イスラエルがヨルダン川西岸地区とガザ地区から撤退するのと引き換えに、イスラエル国家の存在を認めるものだった。

1994年、ペレス氏は当時のイツハク・ラビン首相とPLOのヤーセル・アラファト議長と共にノーベル平和賞を受賞した。その翌年、ユダヤ教徒で過激主義者のイガール・アミルがラビン首相を暗殺し、ペレス氏は暫定的に首相を務めた。

ラビン氏が亡くなったため、ペレス氏は短い間政権を握ったが、パレスチナの原理主義組織ハマスの自爆テロが急増するなど、在任期間中は情勢も不安定だった。1996年、ネタニヤフ氏率いる右派政党リクードがペレス氏率いる左派の労働党を破った。

2007年、ペレス氏は大統領に選出された。大統領在任中はパレスチナ暫定自治政府のマフムード・アッバス議長との和平交渉に従事し続けた。しかしオスロ和平合意のときとは違い、交渉で大きな成果を残すことはできなかった。

大統領の任期を終えた後、ペレス氏は自身が1996年に設立したNGO「ペレス・センター・フォー・ピース」の仕事に戻った。

ここ1年、ペレス氏は度重なる体調不良に悩まされていた。1月に心臓発作を起こし、回復期間中に2度にわたって入院した。不整脈と診断された後、9月にペースメーカーを埋め込んでいた。

ペレス氏と共にオスロ合意に尽力したアメリカのビル・クリントン大統領はTwitterで追悼した。
