奇跡が起こった。盲目の老犬が生まれて初めて愛を知った。

すべては、安楽死直前だったブラッキー見捨てなかった人たちがいたおかげだ。

12月の半ば、ブルニー・ドゥルモンドさんは目が見えない、病気の老犬を動物保護施設から連れ帰った。クリスマスまで生きられるかどうかもわからなかった。しかし、ドゥルモンドさんは生きてくれればと願った。プレゼントをもらったことも、家の中で眠ったことさえないこの犬に、素敵なクリスマスを過ごして欲しかったのだ。

「ブラッキーに会った時は、胸が痛みました、せめて生きている間に、今までとは違う経験をさせてあげたいと思いました。全ての動物に、愛されていないと感じながら死んで欲しくありません。そのための助けになりたいのです」と、ドゥルモンドさんは話している。

そして今、愛されるとはどういうことかをブラッキーは知っている。

ブラッキーは12月13日に、アメリカ・テキサス州オースティン市にある動物保護施設「オースティン・アニマル・センター」に持ち込まれた。ここは、動物を殺さないアメリカ最大の動物保護施設だ。

持ち込んだ飼い主によると、ブラッキーは長い間病気を抱えていたが、獣医に診てもらったことはなく、ずっと屋外で暮らしていたという。

14才の時に視力を失い、胸には大きな腫瘍があった。腸癌も患っているようだった。

「前の飼い主は、安楽死させてくれると思ってブラッキーを連れて来たのです」と、施設のアニマル・サービス副部長クリステン・オーアーバックさんは話している。ブラッキーを診た獣医は、年齢や健康状態を考慮して、安楽死も考えたという。

「そんな時に、クリスマスの奇跡が起こったのです」と、オーアーバックさんは述べる。

「奇跡が起きた」という表現は正確でないかもしれない。善意にあふれた別の動物保護団体「オースティン・ペット・アライブ」が行動を起こしたのだ。

オースティン・ペット・アライブは、健康や行動に問題を抱えていて、引き取り手がみつからない動物を専門にした保護施設だ。安楽死させるかわりに、ブラッキーを引き取ってもう少しだけ幸せな暮らしをさせることにしたのだ。

ほとんどの動物保護施設や救助グループは、最終的な受け入れ家庭をみつけるまで、フォスターホームと呼ばれる家庭に一時的に動物を預かってもらう。

オースティン・ペット・アライブもまた、死が迫っていたり年をとった動物を、ホスピスホームと呼ばれる家庭に預かってもらう。ペットはその家庭に引き取ってもらうわけではないが、残されたの時間を愛情深い家族と過ごせる。

「居心地のよい場所を最後に提供することで、犬や猫たちは尊厳を持って死ぬことができます。残りの日々を、愛してくれる誰かと過ごしてほしいのです」と、オースティン・ペット・アライブの執行役員、エレン・ジェファーソンさんは述べている。

そして12月14日、オースティン・アニマル・センターとオースティン・ペット・アライブでボランティアをしているドゥルモンドさんがブラッキーを家に連れ帰った。新しい生活に慣れるのに、そう長くはかからなかった。

「ブラッキーは食べ物が好きです。胸をなでてもらうのも大好きです。私が出かけているとき、ベッドにこっそり上がるのも好きなんです」と、ドゥルモンドさんは話している。ドゥルモンドさんの声をたよりに、庭で後をついて回ったりもするそうだ。

2015年のクリスマスは、ブラッキーにとってすばらしいものになった。

ブラッキーはドゥルモンドさんと外で遊んだり、寄り添ってテレビを見たりした。オシャレな蝶ネクタイやおもちゃをもらい、美味しいごちそうを食べた。

こんな素晴らしいクリスマスを過ごせたのは、この不運な犬を見捨てなかった人々がいたからだ。

「ブラッキーは1日か2日したら死んでしまうかもしれないと思っていました。だけど驚いたことに、すぐに良くなりはじめたのです」と、オーアーバック氏は話している。良くなった理由は「愛されるペットとしてのが生活が気に入ったからではないか」と考えている。

そしてドゥルモンドさんも、ブラッキーと過ごす時間を楽しんでいる。

ブラッキーと過ごせる時間はそれほど長くはないだろうと知っているが、少しでも長く一緒にいたいと願っている。

「残された日々を快適なベッドで過ごし、できるだけ多くの愛情と優さに触れて欲しいのです。そしてその時が来たら、心地よい中で愛情を感じながら旅だって欲しいのです」
