ドバイ首長国の首長、ムハンマド・ビン・ラーシド・アール・マクトゥーム氏(65歳)がロンドンのテムズ川沿いに建設を計画している6階建ての豪華駐車場に、建築許可が下りた。しかしこの駐車場には一般の人は駐車できない。

ドバイ首長国の首長、ムハンマド・ビン・ラーシド・アール・マクトゥーム氏(65歳)が、ロンドンに建設を計画している6階建ての豪華駐車場に、建築許可が下りた。しかしこの駐車場には一般の人は駐車できない。

ムハンマド氏は、世界で最も裕福な1人として知られている。2008年の彼の資産は推定180億ドル(約2兆1500億円)。その彼が今回建設を計画しているのは自分の専用駐車場で、ロンドンのバタシー地区にある。

建設費用は約2000万ポンド(約36億円)と見られているが、デイリー・メール紙のオンライン版は、「これは基本構造部分の価格にすぎず、ムハンマド氏が大理石を使って駐車場を覆いたいのであれば、費用は間違いなくはねあがるだろう」という関係者の話を伝えている

この駐車場には、ムハンマド氏が所有する114台の高級車を駐車スペースに加えて、運転手用のオフィスや5つ星のホテルも設置される予定だ。

しかし、この建設計画に懸念を示す地元住民もいる。

建設地の近くに住むジェーン・ヘルムさん(52歳)は、「また大金持ちの外国人が大きな計画を立てているようですね。ただ平和に暮らしたい地元住民のことなど考えていないのでしょう」と話す。

「首長や子供たちが、巨大な駐車場から毎日騒々しく出入りする事態だけは避けてほしいです。そんなことになればこの地域全体が台無しにされてしまいます」

しかしワンズワース区議会は、「周辺環境や景観、近隣の建物からの眺めにさほどマイナスの影響があるとは思われない」と述べ、ムハンマド首長が所有する不動産会社、スメック・マネジメントの建設計画を承認した

この駐車場の建設予定地はバタシー・ヘリポートの隣にあるため、首長は側近らとヘリコプターでロンドンにやってきたあと、車に乗り換えてスコットランドのハイランド地方に建設が計画されている寝室が16部屋もある豪邸に向かうこともできる。

バタシー地区は高級住宅街チェルシーからテムズ川を渡った南側にあり、以前は倉庫街だったが現在はパブやレストランが並ぶお洒落な場所となっている。ロックバンド「ピンクフロイド」のアルバム『アニマルズ』のジャケット写真「空飛ぶ豚」が撮影された場所としても有名な「バタシー石炭火力発電所」があるが、この発電所も現在、再開発されようとしている。
