スタバ、オーストラリア事業から撤退　地場コーヒー文化に屈する

アメリカのコーヒーチェーン大手スターバックスが、オーストラリアの直営店事業を地元企業グループに売却した。日本など世界各地に進出して成功を収めているものの、オーストラリアには独自のコーヒー文化が根付いており過当競争から苦戦、「撤退」を余儀なくされたとしている。

アメリカのコーヒーチェーン大手スターバックスが、オーストラリアの直営店事業を地元企業グループに売却したと、47NEWSなどが6月19日に報じた。日本など世界各地に進出して成功を収めているものの、オーストラリアには独自のコーヒー文化が根付いており、過当競争から苦戦し「撤退」を余儀なくされたとしている。

スタバは2000年に最大都市シドニーなどに進出。しかし、08年までに1億豪ドル（約95億円）以上の損失を出し、84まで増やした店舗のうち約60の不採算店を閉めた。出店場所が悪いなど、市場調査が不十分とも指摘された。人口100万人に約1店舗は、先進国では低い出店規模だった。

オーストラリアで人気のコーヒー「フラットホワイト」

イギリスなど欧州系移民が多いオーストラリアではカフェ文化が根付いている。加えるミルクの泡がほとんどない「フラットホワイト」などの独自メニューがあり、レギュラーコーヒーは「ロングブラック」と呼ばれるなど呼称も独特だ。

コーヒー1杯が5.5豪ドル（約520円）と割高なことも消費者に敬遠された。

豪州内のスターバックス運営権や既存の24店は、同国でコンビニエンスストア「セブン－イレブン」を展開するウィザーズ・グループに売却する。売却額は非公表。
