スーパーボウルは、アメリカが誇る栄光のスポーツイベントだが、不運な出来事も少なくない。それは終了直前のファンブルでも、フィールドゴールの不成功でも、明白なインターセプトでもない。フィールド以外のところで起きて、ゲームを止めたり行方を変えたりした出来事だ。
多くのケースは、今日のリアルタイム技術があれば、近代技術による不測の事態を容易に回避できていただろう。
2013年、スーパーボウルXLVIIの最中に停電が起きた。皮肉にも、原因は停電を防ぐために特別に作られた装置だった。「異常」を検知した装置はブレーカーを落とすという決定を下し、フィールドへの送電を34分間遮断した。
スマートグリッドがあれば助かっていたかもしれない。
複数のセンサーがスタジアム全体の電圧と電流のレベルを測定、監視し、予想される利用量と比較する。冗長回路には複数のブレーカーが設置され、解析ソフトウェアが異常を検知し、必要に応じて電力経路を変更する。照明が暗くなったり、暖房やバーの明かり等、重要度の低いシステムは切断されるかもしれないが、ゲームは続行されただろう。
1982年、スーパーボウルXVIのために、バスでチームはシルバードームに向かっていた。バスはそれぞれ異なる経路を通り、サンフランシスコ49ersを乗せたバスは、悪天候に加えて、ブッシュ副大統領のパレードによる渋滞に巻き込まれた。試合前1時間以内に到着したにもかかわらず、49ersは26-21で勝利を飾った。
クラウドソーシングアプリやリアルタイム道路センサー、ストリーミング分析等による動的な経路変更を行っていれば、最悪の渋滞を免れていたかもしれない。またGPSによるリアルタイム位置追跡が、NFLに窮状を伝えていただろう（あるいは、もちろん携帯電話で連絡することもできた）。
スーパーボウルとは直接関係ないが、フットボール関連の特別賞は、1968年の「ハイジ・ボウル」と2014年のシーホークス開幕ゲームに贈られる。

そして最後に ― 1968年、オークランド・レイダーズはニューヨーク・ジェッツと戦っていた。中継したNBCの幹部らは、このゲームの人気にあやかり、新作映画「ハイジ」に視聴者を誘導しようと考えた。
同局はこの映画を強力に宣伝しており、Timexを独占スポンサーに迎えていた。当時ゲームが2時間半を超えることは通常なかったため、午後4時の試合開始に合わせ、ハイジは7時にスタートする予定だった。Timexは（時計メーカーとして）映画を時間通りに放映することにこだわり、契約にもその条項が記載されていた。
しかし、そのゲームでは怪我や反則が通常よりも多く、午後6:45の時点でまだ最終クォーターがゆっくりと進んでいた。ハイジに放送を切り替える担当の技術者は神経をとがらせ、NBCの幹部にゲームの放映を続けるかどうかの判断を聞こうとした。
不運なことに、多くの人々がNBCに電話をかけたため（予定通りハイジを流すか、ゲームを見続けたいかのどちらか）、交換台のヒューズが飛び電話が使えなかった。誰にも連絡が取れないまま、技術者は指示通り午後7時にハイジに切り換えた。ゲームの終了直前、レイダーズは9秒間に2度のタッチダウンを決め、43対23で勝利した。
